When the Beatles left behind their early ‘moptop’ image and began to favour long hair on head and face they led the way for the youth culture of Britain to change entirely. As backpacking gained in popularity and increasing numbers of young people set off to explore the world, many border police began refusing entry to those they deemed hippies. Among the countries that turned travellers away, based solely on their appearance, were the popular destinations of Morocco, Algeria, and Greece. Cartoons began to appear showing long-haired, bearded travellers being refused entry to Greece, while just across the border reposed classical statues depicting men with flowing hair and long curling beards.
