The discussion of facial hair and its battle between the generations was parodied by author Reginald Reynolds in his 1950 book, Beards: An Omnium Gatherum. He discussed the history of beards and looked at the constant battle between old and young, and how beards had fallen in and out of fashion throughout the millennia. His book includes the satirical comment:
Therefore let those only who can be proud of their bodies, display them, and only those who believe their faces to be worth showing remove Nature’s face-cloak. And beards shall be a form of purdah for males who lack chins or have mouths what are weak or ugly … Happy the shaven husband whose wife, having seen his features before marriage, could still sign the contract open-eyed and undeceived.
