This September Beardrevered has teamed up with Murdock London to offer our readers a chance to win one of their famous Beard Care Sets. We think it contains everything you will ever need to keep your facial hair in premium condition but if you don’t trust us, you can can definitely rely on the wisdom and no-frills advise of Ali Martin, who has given us his thoughts on their Beard Moisturiser.

A recent spot of beard chat with a friend of a friend, whose facial enhancement, it must be said, is one of imperial Victorian splendour, saw the relative merits of two products being discussed, namely beard oil and wax. I explained my preference for the former and he, through a twirled moustache that could easily be introducing the lion tamers under a circus big top, indicated the latter was his weapon of choice when it came to wrestling control over unruly whiskers. But only a few days later, dropping through the letter box in a Beardrevered review parcel, I discovered a third way by which to keep the old thicket in check.

Step forward beard moisturiser. Murdock’s was the brand I was asked to trial – others may be available, but being something of a rookie, I have not spotted them – and I have to say I’ve been rather pleased with it . Wax has always felt too sticky to be worn for a whole day – and unnecessary given a personal preference for keeping the tips of my ‘tache facing southwards – meaning oil has been the default when it comes to avoiding beard dryness, getting some control and adding a scent that had previously, in my more clean cut days, been the domain of aftershave. That was before I splodged this moisturiser into my hand and realised, by running it through the old salt-and-pepper facial fuzz, I had discovered something of an upgrade.

‘this one is top notch; a classic, grown-up smell that is clean, fresh and long-lasting’

Now for me, the Murdock’s bottle is a little underwhelming if I am honest – neat and vintage in it’s design, sure, but not perhaps in keeping the price tag – but such things are window-dressing anyway, right? A decent amount rubbed into a towel-dried beard brings with it a hit of menthol and eucalyptus first up, with a good non-greasy sheen and lasting softness to the hair very much the case thereafter. What matters is the product and this one is top notch, with a classic, grown-up smell that is clean, fresh and long-lasting.

Compared to my previous go-to, beard oil, it has some practical advantages too. It is excellent in terms of practicality; sturdy sides and a button top mean you can sling it into a wash bag without fear of spillage, as often occurs with many of those pipette bottlers (Murdock’s accompanying beard oil not being one of them, it must be said). Application-wise, beard moisturiser feels much easier to get through the entire beard evenly too, while another benefit is your hands don’t need washing after use (in fact they too are left well hydrated).

Now forgive me, dear Beardrevered reader, if you have been fully aware of the existence of beard moisturiser for some time – let alone the merits – and this review has not exactly brought  the tables of the beard covenant back  from the grooming equivalent of Mount Sinai. If so, and you have not tried Murdock’s, it is a very good one.

If you are in any way a similar such novice as myself who is simply after a fine smelling and fuss-free way to manage your chin moss, it is definitely worth a try.
