You may remember our post on The Viking of 6th Avenue by Dog Days Films. A film about American composer, musician, poet and inventor of several musical instruments, Louis Thomas Hardin, otherwise known as Moondog.
May 26th saw the anniversary of Moondog’s birthday – 100 years. His was a life that spanned much of the 20th century and took him from the plains of the Midwest to the streets of New York and on to the concert halls of Europe. Along the way he lived a pretty extraordinary and original life and we’re privileged to be telling his story in his centenary year.

Through the rest of this year there are a series of events and concerts planned by some of those who knew and collaborated with Moondog.
There are shows in Copenhagen, Munich, Münster, Recklinghausen, Paris, Lyon, and Brussels to name just a few. On Wednesday June 1st at 3pm, the Dog Day’s film Producer Lori Cheatle was joined by Moondog’s biographer, Robert Scotto for three hours of Moondog music and chat with Irwin Chusid on WFMU. Other recent radio tributes dedicated to Moondog included BBC’s Late Junction and Hear and Now.
Keep up to date on ways to celebrate during the coming months by visiting thevikingof6thavenue.com but of course the best way is to play the man’s music and to introduce someone new to it today!
