Scientific advances had been made about bacteria and its role in illness and infection, so new rules of hygene needed to be imposed. In 1898 new public baths had opened in London, and the St Pancras medical officer’s report included the words: ‘Repeated bathing and cleansing and more vigorous measures, especially the treatment of the hair and beard, are necessary to obtain riddance of some of the human vermin which occasionally prove more intractable.’
